Karimunjawa or Karimun Jawa is an archipelago of 27 islands in the Java Sea, Indonesia, approximately 80 kilometres northwest of Jepara.[1] The islands' name means 'a stone's throw from Java' in Javanese.[citation needed] They have a total land area of 78 km2. The main island is known as Karimun (2,700 ha), while the second-largest island is Kemujan (1,400 ha).[1] In 2011, the islands' population is about 9,000 who inhabit five of the islands. The population is largely Javanese, with pockets of Bugis and Madurese too. Javanese culture dominates the islands and Karimun Jawa Islands are the only islands off Java where Javanese language is the lingua franca.[2]
Karimunjawa National Park is a Nature Conservation Area with a high
level of biodiversity and ecosystems representing the nothern coast of
central Java. The park was established as a National Park by Minister of
Foresty Decree No. 78 in 1999 covering a total area of 111,625 ha.
Karimunjawa National Park has five types of ecosystems: coral reef,
seagrass, mangrove forest, coastal forest, lowland tropical rain forest.
Geographically, the Karimunjawa archipelago is one of the districts
under Jepara Regency, Central Java Province. It lies from 5o49’ - 5o57’
South Latitude and 110 o 04 -110 o 40 East Longitude.The park total area
including sea and land is 111,625 hectares (KNPA, 2004). The park
consists of 22 islands even though there are 27 islands within the
Karimunjawa archipelago. Karimunjawa National Park is a popular marine
tourist destination favored by both domestic and foreign tourist. Its
sparkling bluewater, white sandy beaches and relatively intact
ecosystems and also a friendly inhabitants are the main tourism
attractions.
